Los Keaton son una familia de clase media americana cuyos hijos son, a diferencia de lo que ocurre en otras telecomedias, más conservadores que los padres. El humor se combina con las opiniones políticas de padres e hijos en un choque generacional que da mucho juego; además es una de las primeras series que aborda asuntos como las drogas, el suicidio o el racismo.
