Basada en la novela de Sarah Waters, cuenta la historia de dos huérfanas, Susan (Sally Hawkins) y Maud (Elaine Cassidy). Susan fue criada con otros niños por la señora Sucksby en un barrio bajo de Londres, en el que se ganaban la vida como ladrones. Maud, por su parte, creció en el manicomio en el que su madre murió al dar a luz, hasta que su tío, un hombre con recursos, la recogió, le enseñó a leer y a escribir y la hizo su secretaria. Las dos huérfanas se conocen gracias a Richard Rivers alias “Caballero” (Rupert Evans) Con la ayuda de Susan, Rivers pretende seducir a Maud, casarse con ella y después internarla en un manicomio para poder disfrutar de su fortuna. Pero el plan comienza a fallar porque la relación entre Susan y Maud se hace mas íntima de lo que Rivers había previsto.
