En el sur de los Estados Unidos, en el año 1934, en plena Gran Depresión tras el crack bursátil que condenó a la pobreza a millones de norteameriacanos, un joven huérfano de 18 años, Ben Hawkins, se une a un circo mezcla de feria, freaks, prostitución y vaudeville que le acogerán como uno más. Ben tiene sueños que le inquietan y poderes curativos que le asustan, los mismos sueños que tiene en un mundo opuesto. Donde había pobreza hay bienestar; es el mundo del pastor metodista Padre Justin, el malo de "los inmortales", vive con su hermana Iris en un mundo protegido en California, hasta que comienzan sus visiones. Desde ese momento todo parece indicar que los caminos de ambos protagonistas tendrán que cruzarse de forma inexorable.
