Embora a série fosse classificada como de ficção científica, os enredos geralmente falavam de moralidade, racismo, fanatismo contra as minoria étnicas e ilustrando as diferenças e semelhanças entre os seres humanos e os alienígenas chamado de "newcomers" (recém-chegados). A história tem início quando uma nave espacial alienígena do planeta Tenctons cai acidentalmente na Terra, com cerca de 250.000 escravos, quando se dirigiam ao tal planeta. A nave que vinha seguindo um comboio com outras várias naves cheia de escravos, mas acaba se separando dela devido a alguns problemas e fica a deriva no espaço infinito.
