Em agosto de 20XX, um portal aparece repentinamente no distrito de Ginza, em Tóquio, e desse portal monstros, cavaleiros medievais e outras figuras fantásticas começam a aparecer de outros mundos para a Tóquio moderna. As Forças de Defesa Japonesa agem contra esses monstros e os mandam de volta pelo portal. O 3º Esquadrão de Reconhecimento é enviado para a "Região Especial" liderados pelo soldado (e otaku) Youji Itami. Em sua viagem, eles se juntam a linda elfa que sobreviveu ao ataque de um dragão e ela agora guiará o grupo neste novo e perigoso mundo.
