La brillante y frágil detective Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) es enviada al submarino HMS Vigil para investigar la misteriosa muerte de uno de sus tripulantes. Cuando la escotilla se cierra encima de su cabeza, la realidad que encuentra es muy distinta a lo esperado. Dentro del submarino el secretismo, las jerarquías y el claustrofóbico escenario complican la investigación, y la tripulación se muestra reacia a colaborar. Mientras tanto, en tierra, su compañera y confidente Kirsten Longacre (Rose Leslie) hace sus propias indagaciones. El caso pronto trasciende las paredes del submarino y desvela una conspiración que amenaza el corazón mismo de la seguridad nacional británica.
