Ambientada 1300 años después de los acontecimientos de Cómo entrenar a tu dragón, los dragones son ya sólo una leyenda para el mundo moderno. Cuando una anomalía geológica abre una enorme fisura a kilómetros de profundidad en la superficie de la Tierra, científicos de todo el mundo se reúnen en un nuevo centro de investigación para estudiar el misterioso fenómeno.
