Christine Campbell (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) es una madre neurótica y propietaria de un gimnasio de mujeres que lucha constantemente para mantener el ritmo de quienes la rodean. Un elemento fijo en su vida es su ex marido Richard (Clark Gregg), cuya nueva novia (Emily Rutherfurd) también se llama Christine, de ahí el apodo de "Old Christine". Christine vive con su hijo Ritchie (Trevor Gagnon) y su hermano Matthew (Hamish Linklater), mientras que su mejor amiga y socia comercial, Barb (Wanda Sykes), es constantemente un hombro para que Christine se apoye.
