Los Guardianes encuentran un artefacto secreto que sólo parece reaccionar ante el ADN de Peter Quill. Cuando lo abre, Quill descubre un mapa del tesoro que les conduce a una poderosa arma conocida como la "semilla cósmica", y que al parecer es capaz de crear un universo entero. De este momento en adelante será tarea de los Guardianes encontrar, proteger y en última instancia destruir la semilla cósmica con tal de impedir que caiga en las manos equivocadas.
