Tintín, un intrépido reportero de aspecto juvenil y edad nunca aclarada que viaja por todo el mundo junto con su perro Milú, hay una serie de personajes secundarios que han alcanzado tanta o más celebridad que el protagonista: entre ellos, el capitán Haddock, el profesor Tornasol, los detectives Hernández y Fernández y la cantante Bianca Castafiore. Las aventuras de estos personajes están cuidadosamente ambientadas en escenarios reales de los cinco continentes, y en lugares imaginarios creados por Hergé, tales como Syldavia o San Theodoros. Sobre todo a partir del quinto álbum de la serie (El Loto Azul), su autor se documentó minuciosamente sobre los lugares visitados por sus personajes.
