La serie se centraba en la vida de la familia Conner, una familia de clase baja trabajadora estadounidense, que vivía en la ficticia ciudad de Lanford, Illinois, con serias dificultades para llegar a fin de mes con los escasos sueldos de ambos progenitores, Roseanne y Dan. El hecho de representar en una serie por primera vez en Estados Unidos a una familia de clase baja en la que ambos padres trabajaban fuera de casa hizo que destacara entre público y crítica.34 La serie plasmaba con realismo muchos problemas sociales que no se habían mostrado en las comedias familiares anteriores, tocando temas tabú hasta entonces en otras series de máxima audiencia, ya que trataba y bromeaba sobre la pobreza, el alcoholismo, el consumo de drogas, el sexo, la menstruación, los anticonceptivos, el embarazo de los adolescentes, la masturbación, la obesidad, el aborto, los problemas raciales, las clases sociales, la violencia doméstica o la homosexualidad.
