Situada em um futuro próximo, a história apresenta Bill Masen, um cientista que estuda o Triffid, planta geneticamente manipulada na antiga União Soviética, que se tornou capaz de se comunicar e até caminhar. A planta oferece perigo à humanidade por alimentar-se de carne humana. Por ser um substituto do combustível, a planta é cultivada em vários países do mundo. Mas, ao conseguir se libertar, ela passa a oferecer perigo à humanidade. Nesse meio tempo, uma tempestade solar provoca a cegueira de bilhões de pessoas. Aqueles que conseguiram manter a visão, testemunham o colapso e o caos da sociedade.
