Ted Lawson é um engenheiro que trabalha numa empresa de robótica. Ele é casado com Joan e tem um filho, Jamie. Certo dia, Ted leva para casa um protótipo da empresa onde trabalha, uma androide na forma de uma menina de 10 anos.
