A história começa em 1987, quando Danny Tanner perde sua esposa, Pam, em um acidente de carro. Ele precisa, então, de ajuda para cuidar de suas três filhas, D.J., Stephanie e Michelle. Para isso, Danny recorre ao seu melhor amigo, Joey Gladstone e a seu cunhado, Jesse Cochran. O que deveriam ser apenas algumas semanas transforma-se em anos de convivência.
