Terceira cria da série Lei & Ordem, Crimes Premeditados coloca os investigadores de Nova York nos tradicionais casos policiais, mas apresenta o detetive Robert Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio) liderando uma equipe que tenta entrar na mente dos piores criminosos da cidade a fim de compreender seus atos e levá-los à justiça. Goren é um instintivo e brilhante investigador do departamento de homicídios. Sua parceira, com quem tem afinada sintonia, é a detetive Alex Eames (Kathryn Erbe), que traz um novo estilo e independência para seu trabalho. Quem comanda o escritório é o Capitão James Deakins (Jamey Sheridan), um chefe competente, ambicioso, articulado e político, que sabe muito bem como resolver situações delicadas. O grupo está sempre às voltas com o Procurador de Justiça Ron Carver (Courtney B. Vance), profissional preso às mínimas exigências da lei e que sempre atravessa o caminho dos detetives.
