Na Londres do século 18, Margaret Wells (Samantha Morton) é uma mulher que precisa conciliar os papeis de dona de bordel e mãe solteira. Porém uma casa rival começa a atcar diretamente seu negócio, liderada por Lydia Quigley (Lesley Manville), uma mulher imperiosa e sem escrúpulos.
