Laura Holt, uma detetive particular licenciada, abre uma agência de investigação, mas descobre que clientes em potencial se recusam a contratar uma mulher, por mais qualificada que ela seja. Para resolver o problema, Laura inventa um superior fictício do sexo masculino, a quem dá o nome de Remington Steele.
