A série gira em torno da família Bundy, que vive nos arredores de Chicago e faz qualquer coisa para não ter que dizer palavras gentis uns aos outros. O patriarca Al é um vendedor de sapatos misógino cuja mulher, Peggy, é uma dona de casa que não quer saber de nenhum afazer doméstico. Dizer que os filhos, Kelly e Bud, não têm grandes coisas acontecendo na vida deles é um eufemismo.
